President Osmani met Minister Sveçla, Minister Haxhiu and Director Hoxha regarding the recent murders of women in Kosovo
The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani, in the aftermath of the recent cases of murder of women, held a meeting today with the Minister of Internal Affairs Xhelal Sveçla, the Minister of Justice Albulena Haxhiu and the Director General of the Police, Gazmend Hoxha. At the meeting, President Osmani expressed her deep concern regarding the alarming trend of killings of women and the urgent need to strengthen all links within the security and justice institutions, which have a constitutional obligation to protect the lives of our citizens. The need to increase punishments was also discussed at the meeting, as well as the changes of the Criminal Code required to be made. President Osmani, in the forthcoming days, will hold meetings with other relevant institutions, with the request for the increase of preventive, reactive and punitive measures in relation to the perpetrators of these crimes.
President Osmani proclaims Wednesday as a day of state mourning
The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani, pursuant to the Constitution of Kosovo, has reached a decision to proclaim Wednesday, April 17th 2024 as a day of mourning, in memory of all women and girls killed in Kosovo as a result of gender-based violence. The state mourning will last during the Wednesday, while the State Protocol is charged with carrying out all the necessary actions for the implementation of this decision.
President Osmani reacts following the murder of a woman in Peja: This femicide must be stopped at all costs, we have no lives of girls and women to lose
The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani, on the second day of the Forum on Women, Peace and Security, reacted after the terrible news about the murder of a woman in Peja. President Osmani said that unfortunately today we all woke up in the morning with the terrible news about the murder of a woman by her husband. “This terrible phenomenon that is wounding our society and our country, this femicide which unfortunately has reached extraordinary proportions, must be stopped at all costs and the only way to stop it is if we all reawaken as society, as a state and as a nation. We must all re awake and stand up against this phenomenon, because we don’t have the lives of girls and women to lose”, said President Osmani. Madam President has called on everybody, civil society activists, security and justice institutions, citizens, women and men together, to unite against gender-based violence. “It is the duty of each one of us to fight this phenomenon and protect girls and women, and to protect all the citizens of our country”, stated President Osmani.

President Osmani commemorated the Sllovia massacre
25 years ago, respectively on April 15th and 16th 1999, in Sllovi of Lipjan, the forces of the Serbian genocidal regime killed and massacred 45 Albanians and injured many others. As in all the massacres all around Kosovo, the criminal regime revealed its barbarism, in an attempt to exterminate the Albanians and perpetrate ethnic cleansing. Bringing justice and bringing perpetrators to justice are prerequisites for sustainable peace. Meanwhile, the remembrance of the victims is also evidence of the difficult path we have taken to be free. May the memory of all those who fell for freedom be eternal !

President Osmani received the Speaker of the Assembly of Albania, Lindita Nikolla
The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani, during the second edition of the Forum on Women, Peace and Security, received the Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic of Albania, Lindita Nikolla. According to President Osmani, advancing the interests of Kosovo and Albania as well as increasing coordination in the field of foreign policy, are in the mutual interest of both countries. “Kosovo’s success is also Albania’s and vice versa. For Kosovo, Albania is not only a fraternal state, but also a strategic partner in its European journey. As we enjoyed the support during many historical stages of freedom and state building, we are sure that the Albanian state will support us wherever we might need it”, said President Osmani. President Osmani thanked the representatives of Albania in the Council of Europe and emphasized that she expects them to do the same again tomorrow in the voting process at the General Assembly of the Council of Europe. At the meeting with Speaker Nikolla, President Osmani emphasized that parliamentary diplomacy has an important role in promoting cooperation between Kosovo and Albania, and discussed the possibilities of increasing cooperation between the legislative bodies of both countries, as well as the exchange of experiences.

President Osmani emphasized the need to increase the efforts needed to combat gender-based violence and support the survivors, including strengthening of the legal framework and provision of support services. Furthermore, President Osmani stated the importance of increased political representation and women’s participation in decision-making processes at all levels of government. “Economic empowerment of women, better access to education, health care and economic opportunities play a substantial role in improvement of the position of girls and women in society”, said President Osmani.
President Osmani received the Prime Minister of North Macedonia Mr. Talat Xhaferi
The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani, during the second edition of the Forum on Women, Peace and Security, received the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Mr. Talat Xhaferi. North Macedonia, according to President Osmani, is a neighbouring country and at the same time a supporter of Kosovo. President Osmani said that Kosovo and North Macedonia can exchange experiences in the process of respective European integration and at the same time expressed her belief that this country will continue to support Kosovo on its European path. In this context, Madam President added that Kosovo counts on the further support of North Macedonia in the process of its membership in the Council of Europe, as well as in NATO, the EU and other international organizations. On the eve of voting in the General Assembly of the Council of Europe, Prime Minister Xhaferi informed President Osmani on the full support by North Macedonia. The finalization of joint border points before the start of the summer season as well as the facilitation of doing business were also discussed at the meeting.
