The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Madam Atifete Jahjaga, held a number of meetings on Friday with high U.S. officials in Washington.
She primarily met with the American Under Secretary of Defense, Mrs. Michele Flournoy, with whom she discussed issues of mutual cooperation. .
The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, praised the assistance of the United States of America in establishing peace and stability and the American commitment for peace in Europe. President Jahjaga said that the U.S. military presence in Kosovo and the U.S. military camp Bondsteel is guarantee for the stability in the region and has helped the establishment of a strong relationship between the citizens and the soldiers.
She said she welcomed the continued U.S. military presence in Kosovo as essential for the entire stability in Europe. President Jahjaga said that Kosovo aims the membership in the Partnership for Peace and in the North-Atlantic Alliance, NATO and the U.S. assistance in this process would be crucial.
The U.S. Under Secretary of Defense, Madam Michele Flournoy highly praised the relations between the two countries. She was particularly interested in the security situation in Kosovo and about the situation in the north of the country. She confirmed the U.S. commitment for peace and stability in Kosovo and the region.
During the day, the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Madam Atifete Jahjaga met with the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Robert Mueller. The meeting focused on the modalities of cooperation in the fight against organized crime, corruption and international terrorism.
The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Madam Atifete Jahjaga, met also with the U.S. Senator, Mark Kirk and Senator Ross Johnson. At the meeting they discussed about the continuation of the American support for Kosovo, in particular through the military presence.
President Jahjaga also has held meetings with the ambassador on women issues, Melanne Verveer, and with former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
During the visit in the USA President Jahjaga has also had some interviews for the American media, Washington Times and Reuters as well as for the Albanian section the Voice of America.
