President Jahjaga wrote to Baroness Catherine Ashton

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, sent a letter to the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security and at the same time the Vice President of the European Commission, Baroness Catherine Ashton.

The letter states:

Your Excellency,

It was a great pleasure to see you in Kosovo last week and to have the opportunity to discuss the implementation of the agreement between the Republic of Kosovo and Serbia in normalizing the relations as well as Kosovo’s overall progress toward the European Union integration. I was particularly pleased at the chance to discuss in person the importance of this phase for Kosovo as we make new strides to fully integrate all the citizens and strengthen our democratic institutions.

As you know, I have called for municipal elections to be held on November 3, 2013 throughout the territory of the Republic of Kosovo. As the President of the country, I am fully committed to take all the necessary steps to secure a free and fair election in Kosovo that will result in the election of legitimate representatives to best further the interests of the citizens of Kosovo and address their concerns.

Therefore, I extend to Your Excellency an invitation to send a EU election observation mission to monitor the conduct of these elections.

I look forward to accommodate the EU monitors in Kosovo in autumn.

Sincerely yours,
Atifete Jahjaga
President of the Republic of Kosovo
