President Jahjaga received the representatives of the institutions of justice

The President of the Republic of Kosovo Madam Atifete Jahjaga received in a meeting the Chairman of the Kosovo Judicial Council, Mr. Enver Peci, the Acting Head of the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council, Mr. Sylë Hoxha, the Deputy Minister of Justice, Mr. Lirak Çelaj and the representative of EULEX, the Chief Prosecutor, Mrs. Jaroslava Novotna.

President Jahjaga discussed with the representatives of the institutions of justice about the steps to be undertaken to draft an action plan to guarantee access to justice for victims of sexual violence during the war, a request from the last meeting of the National Council for the Survivors of Sexual Violence during the war.

President Jahjaga said that access to justice is a fundamental and constitutional right for every citizen of the country, and stressed that even 16 years after the war there still isn’t a single person convicted of crimes of sexual violence during the war. She stressed the need for these cases to be treated with priority by the local institutions, and therefore the necessary specialized mechanisms and capacities should be built to ensure dignified treatment of these cases.

President Jahjaga said that justice for these victims is justice for all the citizens, for the entire country demanding that the responsible institutions of justice to be committed even more. 

The Deputy Minister of Justice, Mr. Çelaj Lirak informed President Jahjaga that after her request these institutions have established the working group to draft an action plan for the strategy which will guide the treatment and the addressing of the cases of this category of war crimes, which is expected to be ready in the end of April.

The Acting Head of the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council, Mr. Sylë Hoxha and the Chairman of the Kosovo Judicial Council, Mr. Enver Peci expressed the readiness of the institutions they govern to treat with priority these cases and to cooperate closely with the other institutions and organizations, and non-governmental women organizations. The representative of EULEX, Mrs. Jaroslava Novotna expressed the commitment of this mission to assist the local institutions in this process.
