President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, received today at a meeting the President of the European Council, Mr. Herman Van Rompuy. President Jahjaga and President Van Rompuy discussed the European agenda of Kosovo, the Stabilisation Association Agreement between Kosovo and EU, visa liberalisation, regional cooperation and implementation of the agreement reached at the dialogue process between Republic of Kosovo and Republic of Serbia.
President Jahjaga stated that European integration process has been strengthened by the decision to commence the negotiations on SAA, which marks a new chapter in relations between Kosovo and European Union, confirming the progress achieved. She also said that Kosovo is ready to commence the negotiations on SAA and remains focused on the accomplishment of reforms required and on the speeding up of the EU integration process.
President Jahjaga said that Croatia’s accession in European Union is a clear signal for the rest of the countries of the region that this process is achievable when internal consensus is achieved, as well as all inclusiveness and the required criteria are accomplished.
Madam President said that Kosovo has demonstrated its clear engagements towards regional cooperation and the aim now is to maintain the momentum, which is very important for the stability of the region. President Jahjaga emphasized that Kosovo’s participation into regional and international initiatives must be on the par with all the other participating countries.
Madam President stated that agreement achieved in Brussels by the Prime Ministers of the Republic of Kosovo and Republic of Serbia, on the normalisation of relations between the two states, has been ratified by the Parliament of Kosovo and that it enjoys the backing of the majority of the political spectrum, remarking that its implementation is of utmost importance.
President of the European Council emphasized that he is pleased to be visiting Kosovo, with a positive message on the European future of the country. He said that the European will not be complete without the integration of the Balkan countries into EU.
President of the European Council emphasized that results produced by the dialogue process between Kosovo and Serbia are big and that they have created a new dynamic in the region. He stated that there was, and still is, political will and for this reason it is important to maintain the momentum and to focus into the implementation of the agreements. He welcomed the ratification of the agreement by the Parliament of Kosovo.
President Van Rompuy also said that commencement of the negotiations on SAA brings Kosovo closer to European Union and after this follows a wide agenda of reforms on which Kosovo must focus upon.
