The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani Sadriu has proclaimed the Day of State Mourning in the Republic of Kosovo to be observed on Wednesday, February 8th 2023, following the earthquakes of February 6th, 2023 with the epicenter in Turkey and which resulted in thousands of dead and injured.
Below is President Osmani’s entire post:
More than 5,000 victims have been confirmed dead as the result of the earthquake which hit Turkey and Syria, while thousands more are still under the rubble. A tragedy of devastating proportions that has caused sadness and pain everywhere in the world, including Kosovo. Endless pain for the victims and for those who experienced the horror and lost their loved ones, but also hope for those who are still under the ruins.
Our thoughts and prayers today, as yesterday, are for the victims, the injured and all those affected by this earthquake with our utmost solidarity. Our soldiers are already in Turkey, while Kosovo is full readiness for any additional support.
In the face of such tragedies, we must stand by those who need help. The pain of the Turkish and Syrian people is ours too. Therefore, based on the constitutional and legal powers, as a sign of state and civic respect, I have proclaimed Wednesday, February 8 2023 as the Day of State Mourning in the Republic of Kosovo to be observed on Wednesday, February 8th 2023, following the earthquakes of February 6th, 2023 with the epicenter in Turkey and which resulted with thousands of dead and injured.
As we commemorate the victims, we honor the bravery and persistence of those who are doing their utmost to save every life under the rubble.
The destructive power of this earthquake has shaken everyone’s hearts, but supporting each other in these days of horror awakens hope and faith that life will triumph.
