The President: Every 27th of April brings us together to remember the high price of the freedom and independence of Kosovo

Prishtina, April 27, 2018 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, has paid homage at the Memorial for the Missing on the Day of the Missing of Kosovo.

President Thaçi has said that every 27th of April brings us together to always remember the high price of the freedom and independence of Kosovo.
“For several days Kosovo is marking the Week of Missing Persons. We honor the pain of their families, of the family members to whom we will always be close. Even 19 years after the war, we know that every day many families live with spiritual pain. The loss of the beloved ones for many families is even greater because of the fact that it is still unknown where their bodies are. The families of the missing persons deserve to know the truth”, said President Thaçi.
The Head of State has said that our institutions and the international community should do their best to clarify this sensitive ethical and human aspect.
“Clarifying the tragic past and bringing the perpetrators of the crime to justice strengthens the human conscience and enhances peace in the country and the region. The perpetrators of the crimes, massacres, deportations, disappearances and other forms of systematic murders of our citizens must be brought to justice. The authorities of Belgrade have to respond and provide data for the 1650 people who continue to be identified as missing during the war. So even today, from here, we call on the conscience of the Serbian authorities and expect from international factors to exert pressure on these authorities to provide data on our missing citizens during the war”, said President Thaçi.

He stressed that the issue of the missing persons must be addressed at the highest levels, even in Brussels, as a topic which can not wait longer.
On this day of pain, President Thaçi has expressed gratitude for all our international partners and highly appreciated the work of the Governmental Commission on Missing Persons.
“I thank the associations of the families of missing persons and I guarantee that you will have my maximum support. We will not cease our efforts to close this issue, to close this grave plague of the war as soon as possible, to open up new opportunities and find peace and reconciliation”, he added.
President Thaçi added that the family members of missing persons and of all the war victims, without ethnic differences, deserve the greatest and everlasting institutional respect.
