President Thaçi meets NATO’s new Supreme Allied Commander Europe

Prishtina, July 1st, 2016 – President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi met today with NATO’s new Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Curtis Scaparrotti, who was accompanied by the KFOR Commander, Major General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta.

Besides KFOR’s role in Kosovo, President Thaçi and General Scaparrotti also discussed the work that is being done to transform the Kosovo Security Security Force (KSF) into a new multi-ethnic force, and also about Kosovo’s aim to become part of the Partnership for Peace programme, as a precondition for its full membership in NATO.

“We are working to normalize relations with Serbia. Progress has been achieved, but more remains to be done. Also, we are now engaged in transforming the KSF into a new multiethnic force and for our country to become part of the Partnership for Peace at the earliest opportunity, as a prerequisite to becoming a full member of NATO”, President Thaçi said.

President Thaçi added that Kosovo like many countries from all around the world has been faced with the issue of youngsters fighting in foreign wars in Iraq nad Syria, stressing that as a result of the adoption of laws and mechanisms to prohibit joining armed conflicts outside state territory,  no Kosovan has gone to join foreign wars in the past ten months.

On the other hand, General Curtis Scaparrotti assured President Thaçi that the stability of Kosovo and the rest of the Balkans remains a high priority for NATO.

“We are here in Kosovo to support you for what you have done so far as Kosovo institutions. This stance is shared by NATO and the interior and foreign ministers. I support your efforts to normalize relations with Serbia, economic development and will continue to support the KSF”, General Scaparrotti said.

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi reassured General Curtis Scaparrotti that KFOR enjoys respect, trust and support from everyone in Kosovo, regardless of ethnicity or religious affiliation.
