The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, today in the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Parliament in Canada, in front of the Canadian MPs, spoke about Kosovo and Southeastern Europe.

President Thaçi has said that Canada is a strategic partner of Kosovo with whom we share common values, principles and aspirations.

“As a Kosovo we are grateful for the support that Canada has given to Kosovo for decades. Particularly it is worth mentioning the acceptance of 7,000 refugees from Kosovo in 1999”, said President Thaçi.

He said that Canada’s support has been important even after the war, in the country’s reconstruction and the peace-building.

In front of the Canadian MPs, President Thaçi has said that in February, Kosovo will mark the tenth anniversary of its independence, which was the result of a long international process that sought solution for Kosovo’s international political status.

“It can freely be said that there has never been a more multilateral and internationally coordinated declaration of independence than in the case of Kosovo”, he said.

Without having completed a decade as a state, President Thaçi has said that Kosovo has signed the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Union and has been admitted to the US Congress Millennium Challenge Corporation Program, where it has also begun the implementation of MCC projects, stressed President Thaçi.

He said that Kosovo has been recognized by 114 countries and has joined many regional and international organizations such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund or the Venice Commission.

“We promote the dialogue between religions, best represented by the Inter-Faith Conference, held annually and bringing together religious leaders, politicians, and scholars from around the world discussing the dialogue between religions. We are proud of the tolerance and coexistence between the religious communities that we have in Kosovo. This value is an example for the region and beyond”, said President Thaçi.

In the Canadian parliament, President Thaçi also emphasized the initiative of the establishing of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as a tool for internal dialogue between ethnic communities, to close the war chapter and to open the chapter of peace, dialogue, cooperation, coexistence in a multiethnic, democratic, inclusive society.

“We have consolidated Kosovo’s statehood within, extending the sovereignty across the entire territory of Kosovo, including also the northern part of Kosovo. Thanks to the dialogue and the affirmative measures, today, this part is also involved in the Kosovo institutions”, said President Thaçi, adding that Kosovo is a model for the promotion of dialogue to find solutions for the region.

As the President of Kosovo, along with other parties, he has said that they are now seeking a new dynamic and quality for the dialogue process.

“We are working to reach a comprehensive agreement for full normalization of relations, good neighborly relations and reconciliation between our two states”, he said.

The Head of State has said that in the Balkans there have been efforts to inflitrate fundamentalism and radicalism.

“We have been successful in preventing some terrorist attacks on the territory of Kosovo, but also in the region. We are an active member of the Global Coalition Against ISIS and a leader in the region in combating terrorism, radicalism and extremism”, said President Thaçi.

To strengthen the security infrastructure, he said that the transformation of the Kosovo Security Force into the Armed Forces of Kosovo was also initiated and this will be done with the consent of all communities in Kosovo and in full coordination with NATO and international partners.

The President of Kosovo, in front of the Canadian MPs, said that Kosovo has gone a long way for a decade and is no longer a war-torn country, but a country that works for NATO and EU membership and that successfully completes reforms in economy, justice and democratic institutions.
