President Thaçi calls for greater institutional and social support for the crime victims

Prishtina, October 22nd 2018 – President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, attended today the “Crime Victims’ Rights Week” organised by the Chief State Prosecutor

President Thaçi said that the essence of the state of Kosovo is the aspiration for liberty and equality, which among others means the right to a peaceful, safe and dignified life.

Protection of the citizens and the promotion or the rights of the crime victims, according to President Thaçi, is a crucial obligation of the whole society and in particular that of the justice system.

“Kosovo remains a leader in the region in the field of the crime victim’s rights. Even though we must continuously strive for more, the truth is that Kosovo has shown the continuous and determined dedication to the crime victims’ rights”, added the President.

President Thaçi stated that the law on compensation of the crime victims and establishment of relevant mechanisms required for the implementation of the law is one of the greatest achievements of the justice system in Kosovo.

“Successful implementation of this law will impact our society in general. Kosovo is now a leader in the region with the law on compensation of victims, but also with steps undertaken for its implementation, from the establishment of its governing board to the securing of funds and compensation payments. I welcome the opportunity to hear about all the achievements in this direction today”, said President Thaçi.

Speaking about the law on compensation of crime victims, President Thaçi said that it is clear that the law aims to help most vulnerable individuals in our society, women, children and victims of trafficking.

The head of state said that the domestic violence will not be tolerated.

“It is a special obligation of the justice institutions, to bring to justice all those who exercise violence, not neglecting a single case. But also to ensure dignified treatment and compensation to all crime victims”, said President Thaçi.

The head of state also said at the conference that the support that society and justice provides to the victims is the foundation for the return of the dignity to the victims.

He also asked that each judge and each prosecutor takes more seriously their legal responsibility towards victims.

President Thaçi pointed out that we must all together insist to learn the truth about every single victim and to ask for justice for each one of them.
