President Osmani received Dora Bakoyannis, rapporteur for Kosovo’s application for membership in the Council of Europe

The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani received today Dora Bakoyannis, rapporteur for the Political Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Kosovo’s application for membership in the Council of Europe.

President Osmani has called Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe not only a priority of the Republic of Kosovo, but also a necessity for the protection of human rights and the well-being of all citizens, without distinction.

In this context, President Osmani expressed her appreciation for rapporteur Bakoyannis’ visit in respect of the preparation of the opinion on Kosovo’s CoE membership application, stating her confidence for a fair and merit-based process.

According to President Osmani, Kosovo has incorporated the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and other international documents into its Constitution, ensuring the rights of all citizens, including non-majority communities, the rule of law and democratic governance, as has been shown through the assessments of several international organizations.

“Kosovo is committed to meeting all the Council of Europe membership standards. The Constitution of Kosovo already includes the key conventions of the Council of Europe, making them applicable in Kosovo. In this spirit, Kosovo is strongly committed to European values, including democracy, human rights and the rule of law,” emphasized President Osmani.

During the meeting with the rapporteur Bakoyannis, Madam President underlined that Kosovo expects the debate and voting of the Opinion on Kosovo’s application to take place as soon as possible, in order to for it to proceed with the formal voting on its membership by the Committee of Ministers.

“Next year, the Council of Europe will mark the 75th anniversary of its establishment. Thus, it would be very symbolic for the Council of Europe itself, as the main human rights organization on our continent, to open the door to a democratic country that aspires to join the family of values,” stated Madam President.

President Osmani also informed rapporteur Bakoyannis on the current challenges that the Republic of Kosovo is facing, as well as on the act of aggression committed by Serbia on September 24th.
