President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, was received today in Washington by the USAID Associate Administrator, Mr. Eric Postel.
President Jahjaga thanked Mr. Postel for the help which USAID has provided to Kosovo since the end of the war. President Jahjaga pointed out that Kosovo has gained a lot from the USAID in sustainable economic development and empowerment of the institutions mandated with the rule of law.
Madam President stated that USAID’s e engagements have also resulted with success stories in Kosovo, in particular in the fields of agriculture and education. Madam President praised the USAID programmes in agriculture, which have already shown encouraging results in production, exports and in establishment of new work places, thus turning agriculture into a competitive sector.
Madam President also praised USAID support in education and opportunities for scholarships for Kosovar students to study in various universities around the USA. Madam President pointed out that this program has been managed in a successful manner and has shown good results, and is the best investment in the future of the country.
President Jahjaga informed Mr. Postel for the activities undertaken in Kosovo in implementation of reforms and passing of the threshold for access to funds of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). Madam President states her hope that Kosovo will be selected to become the beneficiary of funds at the next meeting of the MCC Board, which will be held at the beginning of December. Kosovo remains dedicated to establishment of a successful partnership with MCC, said Madam President.
USAID Associate Administrator, Mr. Eric Postel, thanked Madam President of her visit and stated that USAID will continue to support Kosovo through different programmes in fields of economic development, democracy, governance and rule of law. Mr. Postel congratulated President Jahjaga for the work undertaken in order for Kosovo to pass the threshold and to become an MCC funds candidate country.
During her visit to USAID, President Jahjaga also visited the memorial which honours the USAID staff fallen on duty around the world.
