President Jahjaga received the members of the Working Group on access to justice of the victims of sexual violence during the war

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, received today at meeting members of the Working Group on access to justice of the victims of sexual violence during the war, Chairman of the Kosovo Judicial Council, Mr. Enver Peci, Deputy State Prosecutor, Ms. Sevdije Morina, Justice Deputy Minister Mr. Lirak Çelaj and EULEX representative, Chief Prosecutor Ms. Jaroslava Novotna.

President Jahjaga congratulated the representatives of the justice institutions on finalization of the action plan for access to justice of the victims of sexual violence during the war, classifying it to be an important initiative of the institutions of the country in offering of justice the victims of sexual violence during the war.

President Jahjaga stated that access to justice remains as one of the main priorities of the National Council on Survivors of Sexual Violence during the War, aiming to rehabilitate these victims, and emphasized the need for offering of legal institutional mechanisms in accordance with the specifics of this war crime.

Deputy Justice Minister, Mr. Lirak Çelaj, said that necessary reforms must be carried out in justice institutions for the implementation of this plan, for the purpose of development of capabilities of relevant actors, and for offering of support which will guarantee empowerment of the victims of sexual violence and awareness raising of the society related to this war crime.

Chairman of the Kosovo Judicial Council, Mr. Enver Peci, informed Madam President with the decision of this institution to select three judges of the Prishtina Basic Court and one judge in each Regional Basic Courts of Kosovo for the necessary professional training on issues related to sexual violence during the war and domestic violence.

Their determination to provision of access to justice for the victims of sexual violence during the war was also expressed by the deputy State Prosecutor Ms. Sevdije Morina, and the EULEX representative Ms. Jaroslava Novotna.

Working Group on access to justice for victims of sexual violence during the war was established by request from President Jahjaga, as part of engagements of the National Council on Survivors of Sexual Violence during the War.
