President Jahjaga met with the Foreign Minister of the Commonwealth of Bahamas, Mr. Frederick Mitchell

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, met today in New York with the Foreign Affairs Minister of the Commonwealth of Bahamas, Mr. Frederick Mitchell, with whom she discussed the processes which Kosovo is going through, the importance of its international consolidation and membership in international organisations.

President Jahjaga in her discussion with Minister Mitchell emphasized that Kosovo, since the declaration of its independence in 2008, has made considerable advances, turning itself into a factor of stability in the region and strong promoter of good neighbourliness. She also added that Kosovo’s independence is legitimized by the verdict of the International Court of Justice and is by now recognised by 108 countries, members of the UN.

Madam President stated that Kosovo is built upon civic principles and promotes the values of tolerance and understanding between all communities. She pointed out that recognition of the independence of Kosovo will help not only the stability of the country but of the whole region as well, and would ensure sustainable peace.

President Jahjaga pointed out that recognition of Kosovo’s independence by the Commonwealth of Bahamas would contribute to the continuation of the consolidation of the state of Kosovo, in building of relations between two countries and would offer support for the membership of Kosovo in international organisations, with particular emphasis in UN membership.

Foreign Affairs Minister of the Commonwealth of Bahamas said that his country is closely following the developments in the Balkan region and the dialogue process between Kosovo and Serbia on normalisation of relations as well.
