President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, after the consultations with all the political parties, has decreed June 8th as the date on which the pre term parliamentary elections will be held in Kosovo.
On this occasion, President Jahjaga has issued a statement for the media, which we are here publishing in full:
After the decision of the Parliament of Kosovo for its dissolution, I have commenced during yesterday and today consultational meetings with all the political parties of the country with the purpose of setting of the most favourable date for the pre term parliamentary elections. I have also met with the Chairwoman of the Central Electoral Commission in order to discuss the technical aspects of the electoral process and the preparedness of the Commission for the smooth proceeding of the pre term elections in Kosovo.
After the official notification by the Parliament of Kosovo on the dissolution decision, I have yesterday decreed this decision.
In lieu of today’s decision of the Parliament of Kosovo for its dissolution, the country has entered into an important process, which will determine its democratic future.
Pursuant to the consultations with political parties and the CEC Chairwoman and based upon my Constitutional prerogatives and in respect of the legal time limits, I have reached the decision to decree the holding of pre term parliamentary election in Kosovo on June 8th.
Pre term parliamentary elections must demonstrate our readiness to guarantee the free vote of the citizens of Kosovo. These elections must be closely observed in order to guarantee a regular process, and in the coming days I will also be asking the EU to send a monitoring mission to closely monitor the developmental process of our country’s pre term elections.
I appeal to the whole political spectrum of Kosovo for a dignified electoral campaign from this very moment, and to all the citizens of Kosovo, regardless, to participate as massively as possible in the pre term elections of June 8th, in order to ensure a fair process as these elections mark an important test of the development of our internal democracy.
We have demonstrated, through the last local elections, our political maturity in organisation of free and fair elections, on the whole territory of the Republic of Kosovo. I will also be meeting with mechanisms mandated to protect the vote and ensure that these pre term general elections fulfil our expectations.
