President Osmani: What the people of Ukraine are experiencing now, brings back memories of the grievous wounds inflicted upon citizens of Kosovo during the 1990s by the Serbian genocidal regime
The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani – Sadriu participated at the solidarity with Ukraine march, organized today in Pristina by civil society organizations. President Osmani thanked everyone for their participation, but above all thanked the civil society organizations for the organization, which according to her once again proves that Kosovo stands strong with the people of Ukraine, as it has stood throughout history with freedom-loving nations around the world. “Of course, what the people of Ukraine are experiencing right now brings back memories of the grievous wounds inflicted upon citizens of Kosovo during the 1990s by the Serbian genocidal regime. Therefore, we have joined the democratic world, we have joined our allies not only to condemn the Russian aggression on Ukraine but at the same time to demand responsibility for the crimes being committed by the war criminal, dictator Putin. “We will stay united, we will unite our voice and actions as we did before, and I am convinced that as in the case of Kosovo in '99, now in Ukraine in 2022, freedom and democracy will triumph,” stressed President Osmani. According to Madam President, Kosovo with all its capacities is ready to receive refugees from Ukraine. “Since the very first day of Russia's aggression on Ukraine, we have initiated this issue with the relevant institutions. You already know that a resolution of the Assembly of Kosovo has been adopted, and our institutions have shown readiness to use all the capacities we have and that have been built in the meantime for the reception of refugees from Ukraine. At the same time, of course, we have made this known to the states that now have more refugees, but also to other allied states. Furthermore, Kosovo has shown readiness to provide support and hospitality to journalists from Ukraine, not only for them to reside in Kosovo but also continue to carry out with journalism and reporting from a safe place, that is from the Republic of Kosovo. We have done everything in our power and we will continue to do it within the capabilities that a small country like Kosovo has. But let us be clear that it is important that our voice is heard in every corner of the world related to what happens when dictators are pampered and how much help is needed from our Western allies and other peace-loving states for the people of Ukraine right now. “They are being bombed by Russia,” said President Osmani. The head of state also announced that institutions have communicated with Ukrainian embassies around the world, especially in countries where Kosovo also has embassies. “Of course, we have communicated with Ukrainian embassies around the world, especially in countries where Kosovo also has embassies. We have also sent our messages to the central institutions of Ukraine. Of course, they are aware of all the measures undertaken by the Republic of Kosovo in support of the people of Ukraine, as well as in respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of this state. “They are also aware of the fact which state in our region is continuing to stand by Putin and Russia, and of course, it is Serbia,” said President Osmani.

Dear Jashari family, Uncle Rifat and all of you attending tonight, Dearly beloved descendants of the Jashari family, Honourable Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Konjufca Honourable Prime Minister, Mr. Kurti Deputy Prime Ministers, Ministers, members of the Government Cabinet, Honourable Associations of the Kosovo Liberation Army War, Families of martyrs, war veterans and invalids, Representatives of the institutions, Dear participants, Today marks the twenty-fourth year since the heroic fall of the Jashari family, which stood besieged for three days and three nights in a row by countless forces of the then Yugoslav army and police, stood stoically, acted heroically defending the threshold of the house, the threshold of Kosovo and the ideal of freedom. Twenty-four years of remembrance of their sacred sacrifice, a sacrifice that must be remembered every day, because without it we would have neither freedom nor the state. We will impart this memory from generation to generation, because these stories should not be taught only in history books, they should be told in every circumstance and in every house. This is because not only the patriotism of families, such as the Jashari family but also the evil of hegemony in the heart of Europe was demonstrated in Kosovo, hence we must be committed to the prevention of such evil. Today marks twenty-four years since our country recognized the immense bravery and courage of this family in the unequal fight with the aggressor. We bow on this day to the legendary commander Adem Jashari, to the whole Jashari family and to all our heroes. We remember and honour on this day all the heroes and martyrs who fell for our country. The echo of Jasharaj's courage and bravery crossed the borders of Kosovo, the borders of the Balkans, the borders of Europe and across the Atlantic Ocean, thus awakening the conscience of freedom-loving states and peoples around the world, for a small country like Kosovo- a country with a big heart. We will never forget the obligation we have towards those who gave their lives for the freedom of Kosovo, who sacrificed everything for it. The KLA epic is part of our history to reaffirm our commitment to selfless service to the country. In doing so, we not only honor the memory of those before us, but also pledge to continue the legacy of perfection and patriotism they showed, working hard to leave our children a much better place! Today, as never before in the post-war peace in Europe, new destructive instruments and new systems of war but with old ideologies and mentalities are threatening peace in the region, and throughout Europe, thus threatening the whole world. In this situation, it is imperative that we strengthen our army. This army of ours is the best guarantor of our security and peace, and we should be proud of it. Therefore, in times like these when world peace is troubled, we need unity, because only in this way will we be able to face the challenges. Kosovo is and will always be on the side of freedom-loving nations and on the side of democracy, but the Russian-Serbian hegemonic tendencies are also present in our region. Their efforts to destabilize the Western Balkans region, and Kosovo in particular, are evident. Therefore, Kosovo's membership in NATO and other international organizations is more necessary than ever to create the opportunity for long-term peace and stability in the region and beyond. Our daily commitment is a Kosovo oriented towards Euro-Atlantic values, a Kosovo that our citizens are proud of and that all those who fell for its freedom and independence would be proud of. The legendary commander Adem Jashari and the whole Jashari family will always remain a shining beacon on our path and that of the generations that will come after us. God bless the Jashari family! Highly esteemed uncle Rifat, Dear Jashari family, Honourable Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Konjufca Honourable Prime Minister of the Republic Mr. Kurti Members of the government cabinet, Honourable representatives of central and local institutions of the Republic of Kosovo, Dear deputies, Honourable Speaker of the Assembly of North Macedonia, Speaker Xhaferi, Ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions in our country, Honourable representatives of the KSF, KSF Commander, Lieutenant General Bashkim Jashari, Dear families of martyrs! War veterans, KLA invalids, Dear participants! Today we have gathered at this special session to commemorate the sacrifice of the Jashari family, the historical weight of the events of March 5, 6 and 7th 1998, as well as the impact that the sacrifice of this family, but also of all those men and women, of the young men and women who were sacrificed on the altar of freedom, had upon our recent history. Unfortunately, today, when we are remembering this history, which seems to be repeated, only to other people. Similar goals, similar methods, same ideology. And, the same innocent victims, women, children and the elderly, who are “guilty” only because hegemonies say so. The Jashari family found itself in this situation 24 years ago. Facing a terrible hegemony of a murderous regime, which left no means of violence unused with the aim of exterminating the Albanians. But as it is known by now, there is no means of violence that defeats the conviction of a people to live free. Adem Jashari and the Jashari family were aware of this. The people of Kosovo knew this. Therefore, it persevered vehemently and emerged victorious against an ideology of a genocidal regime. This is the message that we, the representatives of the Free Republic, who have experienced hegemonic violence, must convey today, during these dark days of modern European history, to all freedom-loving nations. We have been brought here today in this session precisely by pride, the pride for our legendary hero, for the Jashari family, for our heroes, for the resistance of our people. And with it, the pain of the sublime sacrifice of an entire family and an entire nation inevitably holds us together.. Dear deputies! Today, 24 years after the attack on the Jashari family and its heroic fall, we are gathered to evoke memories, to renew the reminiscence of our heroes. For our painful history, but also for the pride with which we are wested with. Because we stood standing. We stood standing all until the final victory. Despite the fact that we have faced great injustices, one of which a the historical one, we have suffered unitl the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Generations endured this pain. Therefore, the enlivening of an independent state, whether mentioned in family settings or when it became a maxim of the elites was a permanent goal. It became immediate, in the late 1980s and early 1990s when Yugoslavia was disintegrating, along with the communist ideology on which it was still formed and still breathing. At this time, Kosovo faced a savage regime, which aimed to exterminate the Albanian people in Kosovo, and it began to resist the regime and articulate demands for freedom and independence. In addition to the political articulation of legitimate demands, as early as 1991 it started organizing the defense and Adem Jashari was among the first to go to Albania to train with the first volunteers of the Kosovo Liberation Army. The constant threat had become a daily occurrence for him and for Kosovo. Systematic violence had only strengthened the sense of rejection and resistance, as tyrants throughout history have rewritten their own destiny by aggravating the burden of violence. The Jashari family, as well as the whole of Kosovo, were besieged, tortured, killed and imprisoned on a daily basis. The Jashari family was surrounded on December 30th 1991 and January 22nd, 1998, but never surrendered. Not even during the decisive battle of March 5, 6 and 7th, when numerous paramilitary and military forces surrounded the Jasharaj neighbourhood in Prekaz. The family with fellow villagers and comrades resisted for many hours, though many of its members fell from the shells that knocked down the roof of the house and the walls of the tower. Among them are many children under the age of 16, but also Adem Jashari himself, thus becoming a symbol of human sacrifice and a symbol of resistance and laying the strong foundations of our freedom. Dear citizens! In the memory of nations there are events that are considered to have brought about a great turning point in their struggle for freedom. They are engraved in their common calendar and are stored as precious stones in the memory of each member of the nation. The heroic deed of the KLA commander Adem Jashari, and the sublime sacrifice of the entire Jashari family for freedom, is the most important event, which has laid the foundations of the state and will always remain in the memory of the Albanian nation and will be preserved there for eternity. The heroism and sacrifice of the Jashari family marked this important turning point in the new history of Kosovo, but also influenced the recognition of the sad reality in Kosovo, and consequently the mobilization of the international community for the cause of Kosovo. The images of children, women and the elderly falling on the doorsteps of their homes, defending the threshold of the whole of Kosovo quickly turned into a call for the protection of human values everywhere in the world. But, more than that, they touch the consciousness of the civilized world, which was supposed to protect an oppressed people, and by protecting it, to defend the values of its own civilization. In the Europe of the late twentieth century, the fiercest attack of a totalitarian and genocidal regime on a family and a nation was taking place, which all it asked for and wanted was the freedom of its own nation, a life in freedom, without the oppression

On this day, the spirit of freedom that started in Prekaz, in the Jashari family, was carried everywhere through the Kosovo Liberation Army. On this day, which is just one of a few, but will remain in our history for centuries, the Jashari family in Prekaz found itself under the siege of the forces of the Serbian genocidal regime. This family had experienced such sieges on December 30th 1991, January 22 1998 and finally on March 5, 6 and 7 of 1998. In all three sieges, the resistance of the Jashari family, led by Shaban, Hamza and the legendary commander Adem Jashari, was not simply an attempt to protect the threshold of their home. Together, they defended the threshold of Kosovo, our common home to which they sacrificed themselves. In the three days of the Epic, they became heroes, and as such, as heroes of the nation, they will remain for as long as Kosovo exists. They stood in defense of dignity, freedom and the right to a state, so on this day, we bow before their heroic deed On March 5, 6 and 7th 1998, the resistance of the Jashari family was a call for the mobilization of the whole nation to end slavery, to restore dignity in the country and to send the message that freedom is priceless. Refusing to submit, the Legendary Commander, Adem Jashari along with many family members and fellow villagers fell heroically, in defense of the homeland. This epic sacrifice of the Jashari family with fellow villagers and comrades became the foundation stone of our freedom and state. This family is the portrait of our freedom, which was difficult to achieve, for which it took a lot of effort, for which 3 thousand KLA martyrs fell, 13 thousand civilians, nearly 20 thousand women and men were raped and there are still over 1600 persons who are forcibly disappeared. But there is still no justice for any of them. Therefore, justice must be done both to make sense of our freedom and to draw lessons from history. We are not seeking anything more than justice, because we owe it to ourselves for a better future. Distinguished guests, Dear Officers, The resistance and sublime sacrifice of the Jashari family were and are the ideals to protect freedom and the right to live in a sovereign state. The Jashari family did this under the courage, not only of the family member but also of the commander of our army, the legendary Adem Jashari. Thank you Commander! Thank you, Jashari family! Thank you to our Liberation Army, who sealed our destiny as a people and as a state. Today we are here at this Memorial Day, in the barracks that proudly bears the name of the legendary commander, therefore both our pride and our responsibility have come together. In addition to the inspiration that this name gives to every soldier of the Republic of Kosovo, it also charges them with responsibility for the homeland at a time when peace is becoming increasingly challenging. As we once did, the world today is striving to defend freedom as a universal right. Today, the burden of security falls on our soldiers for our people and our state. I strongly believe that you are our guardians and the guardians of every corner of the territory of Kosovo. Our liberation war together with our allies made our freedom, and you honourable soldiers, will maintain our freedom. Threats to freedom are already a reality that we are still experiencing. Hegemony is still being seen on our continent, in Europe. We still know their sufferings today and we know more and more those who aim for hegemony. This situation necessitates the need for unity and vigilance because just as there is no eternal war, there is also no eternal peace! We must never give up our effort to keep the state viable and to protect it everywhere and anytime. As the supreme commander of our army, I am convinced that you, the brave soldiers, will do this and that you are ready for any situation. Although our army is in the phase of transformation, you have already provided enough evidence that along with international partners you can serve in any mission, to be not only a guarantor of peace in our country but also its importer, wherever the need arises. Today, as never before, we must increase our commitment to our military. Therefore, the establishment of the Security Fund by the Government is proof that we want to strengthen our army in all aspects and with the contribution of everyone. This is our army built with many sacrifices, so we should all feel a belonging to it, not only from the services it offers but also by supporting it concretely, because the more we support our army, the more secure is our future. Therefore, I strongly believe that we will achieve this with the dedication, courage and bravery of the girls and boys of the Force, which is growing every day more and more alongside our capacity. Our army in this process is further developing as a professional military force and interacting with NATO forces. Therefore, I say again as we have said in these 14 years, NATO membership remains a strategic objective of our state, hence the membership in the North Atlantic Alliance is now more necessary than

They stood in defense of dignity, freedom and the right to a state, so on this day, we bow before their heroic deed On March 5, 6 and 7th 1998, the resistance of the Jashari family was a call for the mobilization of the whole nation to end slavery, to restore dignity in the country and to send the message that freedom is priceless. Refusing to submit, the Legendary Commander, Adem Jashari along with many family members and fellow villagers fell heroically, in defense of the homeland. This epic sacrifice of the Jashari family with fellow villagers and comrades became the foundation stone of our freedom and state. This family is the portrait of our freedom, which was difficult to achieve, for which it took a lot of effort, for which 3 thousand KLA martyrs fell, 13 thousand civilians, nearly 20 thousand women and men were raped and there are still over 1600 persons who are forcibly disappeared. But there is still no justice for any of them. Therefore, justice must be done both to make sense of our freedom and to draw lessons from history. We are not seeking anything more than justice, because we owe it to ourselves for a better future. Distinguished guests, Dear Officers, The resistance and sublime sacrifice of the Jashari family were and are the ideals to protect freedom and the right to live in a sovereign state. The Jashari family did this under the courage, not only of the family member but also of the commander of our army, the legendary Adem Jashari. Thank you Commander! Thank you, Jashari family! Thank you to our Liberation Army, who sealed our destiny as a people and as a state. Today we are here at this Memorial Day, in the barracks that proudly bears the name of the legendary commander, therefore both our pride and our responsibility have come together. In addition to the inspiration that this name gives to every soldier of the Republic of Kosovo, it also charges them with responsibility for the homeland at a time when peace is becoming increasingly challenging. As we once did, the world today is striving to defend freedom as a universal right. Today, the burden of security falls on our soldiers for our people and our state. I strongly believe that you are our guardians and the guardians of every corner of the territory of Kosovo. Our liberation war together with our allies made our freedom, and you honourable soldiers, will maintain our freedom. Threats to freedom are already a reality that we are still experiencing. Hegemony is still being seen on our continent, in Europe. We still know their sufferings today and we know more and more those who aim for hegemony. This situation necessitates the need for unity and vigilance because just as there is no eternal war, there is also no eternal peace! We must never give up our effort to keep the state viable and to protect it everywhere and anytime. As the supreme commander of our army, I am convinced that you, the brave soldiers, will do this and that you are ready for any situation. Although our army is in the phase of transformation, you have already provided enough evidence that along with international partners you can serve in any mission, to be not only a guarantor of peace in our country but also its importer, wherever the need arises. Today, as never before, we must increase our commitment to our military. Therefore, the establishment of the Security Fund by the Government is proof that we want to strengthen our army in all aspects and with the contribution of everyone. This is our army built with many sacrifices, so we should all feel a belonging to it, not only from the services it offers but also by supporting it concretely, because the more we support our army, the more secure is our future. Therefore, I strongly believe that we will achieve this with the dedication, courage and bravery of the girls and boys of the Force, which is growing every day more and more alongside our capacity. Our army in this process is further developing as a professional military force and interacting with NATO forces. Therefore, I say again as we have said in these 14 years, NATO membership remains a strategic objective of our state, hence the membership in the North Atlantic Alliance is now more necessary than
