President Osmani’s Speech at the Commemorative Meeting held in honour of the Former Speaker of the Republic of Kosovo, Academician and Professor Nexhat Daci

Highly esteemed family of Academician Nexhat Daci, Honorable Speaker of the Assembly, Prime Minister of the country, President Sejdiu, Honorable Representatives of Institutions, Leaders of Political Parties, Ministers, Members of Parliament, Family of Academician Nexhat Daci, Academicians, Colleagues, Friends and Fellow Citizens, We have gathered today to honour the life and work of a man who belongs to the category of people for whom history speaks with extraordinary respect. We have gathered to bid farewell to Academician Nexhat Daci, a statesman, scholar and dedicated intellectual. With high level of erudition, personal integrity and unwavering dedication, he served Kosovo as Speaker of the Assembly, Acting President, MP, academic and head of scientific institutions, leaving an indelible mark on the construction of democratic institutions and the development of scientific thought in our country. In the history of nations, there are people who emerge during peaceful times and there are people who are shaped during difficult times. Academician Nexhat Daci belonged to the latter. Through the most difficult periods of our people, he stood resolutely in the service of the cause of freedom and independence, being a close associate of the historic President, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova in this cause. In that era when wisdom was as necessary as courage, he chose the path of wisdom, long-term vision and state responsibility. He did not see politics as daily clashes, but as a process of patiently building the foundations of the state. His contribution to the formation of Kosovo’s institutions was quiet, but profound. As Speaker of the Assembly, he understood that democracy was not only a procedure, but also a culture, not only a rule, but also respect. He believed in dialogue, in law, in argument and in the strength of institutions that survive each individual. This was his state-building philosophy. As a true resister, he never accepted compromises to the detriment of Kosovo in his engagements. Academician Nexhat Daci was not only a statesman. He was also a peerless academic mind, a man of knowledge who saw science as a bridge between cultures and as a space for cooperation. His profile was deeply open to ideas, always respectful of differences and convinced that societies progress when knowledge knows no linguistic, ideological or ethnic boundaries. He understood that Kosovo, to be strong, must be knowledgeable, open and connected to the world and to friends. At a time when politics was not simply a competition for power, but the only means through which we fought for rights, for freedom and for our very existence as a state and as a people, the role of the intellectual took on an extraordinary historical weight. Academician Nexhat Daci belonged to that generation of thinkers who understood that the silence of knowledge at crucial moments is a form of surrender. Therefore, he never remained silent. He brought the mind of the academic to politics not to politicize knowledge, but to ennoble politics. And this is precisely what he achieved through his noble commitment to politics. In the process of peaceful resistance, of achieving freedom and state-building, he proved that the intellectual has the duty not to remain at a comfortable distance from reality, but to take responsibility and put his authority at the service of the general interest. Academician Daci combined his multifaceted profile as a professor, scientist, academic and statesman, putting each of his dimensions in the service of the people and the state. He proved that when knowledge is guided by conscience and power by reason, politics can become an act of service and not domination. This is his deepest legacy and proof that freedom is not won without clear minds and that the state is also built with knowledge, and that the people are better protected when their destiny is guided by people who know how to think beyond the day and beyond themselves. In this sense, his entire life was a true example, because the greatness of man is always measured by the traces we leave behind. Our academician departed into eternity, but left indelible traces in the creation of our free and democratic institutions, in the scientific thought he cultivated, in the political culture he represented and above all in the human example he left behind. Today, as we bid him farewell, we are not just saying goodbye to a man, but to an era of prudence, knowledge, and public responsibility, which he left behind as an example for us to follow. The pain is great for the family, for the friends and for the collaborators, but equally great is our obligation to preserve and continue his legacy, the legacy of the rule of law, of free thought and of respect for knowledge with the belief that Kosovo is evermore strengthened through work and a long-term vision. May he rest in peace in the land of free Kosovo and may the memory of Academician Nexhat Daci be eternal! Thank you!

President Osmani conveys her condolences to the Daci family, friends, and associates on the passing of the former Speaker of the Asembly of the Republic of Kosovo, academician and distinguished professor, Nexhat Daci

It was with deep sorrow that I received the news of the passing of the former Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, academician and distinguished professor, Nexhat Daci. Academician Daci was a rare personality who combined scientific knowledge, academic dedication, and institutional commitment, leaving an indelible mark as Speaker of the Assembly, MP, academician, and leader of the country’s scientific institutions. During the most difficult years for the people of Kosovo, particularly during the nineties, Academician Nexhat Daci was strongly engaged to serve the cause of freedom and independence as a close associate of the historic President, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova. With knowledge, prudence and vision, he made a valuable contribution to establishing the strong foundations of the state of Kosovo. His multidimensional contribution to state building, the development of higher education and the advancement of science will remain an important part of our institutional and intellectual history. In these difficult moments, I express my most sincere condolences to the Daci family, friends, collaborators and all those who had the fortune to know and work with him. May the memory of Academician Nexhat Daci be eternal!

President Osmani’s 2026 New Year’s Greetings

Dear citizens of the Republic of Kosovo, Dear compatriots, wherever you might be, On this year change night, as we bring to a close a year filled with work, important decisions, and challenges, we pause to reflect on the path we have traveled together and on the strength we have shown as a state and as a society. The year we are leaving behind has demonstrated that Kosovo moves forward when it acts with determination, values and unity. It has been a year in which we have further strengthened the international position of our country, we have protected the constitutional order and state interests, as well as a year in which we have continued to work to fortify our alliances with our strategic partners. Kosovo has shown that it is present, heard and respected at international tables, as a factor of peace, stability and trust. Kosovo stood firm against any destabilizing efforts, while internally it continues to build a more just society, with human rights, equality and dignity being its common foundation. Today, Kosovo concluded a difficult year, but one in which its voice was loudly heard and our stance in the international arena was principled and unwavering. It was a challenging year, especially with the delays in establishing institutions, as it was a year that strengthened us and prepared us to move forward with greater confidence and greater responsibility. It was also a year in which the strength of democracy and our citizens was demonstrated: of workers, police and military personnel, teachers, doctors, young people full of innovative ideas, our extraordinary women and girls, as well as our diaspora, which continues to be an irreplaceable pillar of Kosovo’s development and representation in the world. The coming year of 2026 finds us with new responsibilities and clear goals. Our goal remains an even safer, fairer, more integrated, and developed Kosovo. A Kosovo where the law is applied equally to all, where institutions are always at the service of citizens and where every young man and woman has the prospect of building a future with dignity in their own country. In the New Year, our unwavering commitment will continue to focus on the relentless strengthening of the rule of law, the advancement of our country’s international standing, enhanced security, support for families, youth, and the building of a future with greater economic development and well-being. On this special night, I wish you good health, peace and prosperity. May the year 2026 be a year of cooperation, responsibility and success to each one of you and to our Republic. Let us start the new year with confidence in ourselves, in each other, and in our Kosovo. Happy New Year 2026, with best wishes for good health and moments of joy and celebration, to you and the Republic of Kosovo!
