STATEMENT OF THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO ON THE OCCASION OF MAY 3rd, WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

On World Press Freedom Day, we value and respect the work of all the journalists and the role of media in promotion of the values of our society and in building of a democratic and free state.

On World Press Freedom Day, we value and respect the work of all the journalists and the role of media in promotion of the values of our society and in building of a democratic and free state.

Fundamental human rights, which include the freedom of expression, are entwined in and guaranteed by the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Kosovo, and as such they must find full implementation in our society.

However, the fact that media in Kosovo are partially free and that journalists consider to be threatened and under duress is disturbing.

Attacks upon the journalists, as is the one on the Klan Kosova team in Malisheva and above all the attacking of the home of the RTK Editor in Chief, Mr. Mufail Limani, are unacceptable acts and are attempts to abolish the freedom of speech and suffocate the public debate.

It is unacceptable that, in Kosovo which we are all building, the work of the media is hindered and that their freedom is constrained. Duress, blackmail and threats against them are unacceptable and intolerable. Kosovo is a legal state where rule of law and order are basis upon which the state stands on.

On the World Press Freedom Day, we encourage the media and the journalists to continue with their work, by strengthening their working ethics and their professionalism. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right, and we appeal to the journalists not to give up on this right, as only in that manner we may build a proper democracy and a legal state.
