Kosovo has officially joined the global initiative to reduce methane levels

The consistent work and inter-institutional coordination brings good news for Kosovo in terms of combating climate change.

Kosovo has now officially joined the global initiative to reduce the level of methane (Global Methane Pledge), being this an initiative led by the United States of America and the European Union in the framework of COP26 in Glasgow.

In March of this year, on the sidelines of the Doha Forum, President Vjosa Osmani met with the former US Secretary and now the Presidential Special Envoy for climate issues, John Kerry, in which case one of the main topics was Kosovo’s approval of the Global Methane Commitment. With the initiative of President Osmani, further coordination in this direction was followed by the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure.

The goal of this initiative is for countries to voluntarily commit to reducing methane levels by at least 30% in all sectors compared to 2020. Methane is one of the largest pollutants and the main contributor to climate change, being responsible for half of the increase in global temperature compared to pre-industrial levels. The reduction of methane levels in various sectors is estimated to be one of the effective measures in terms of achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement and limiting the increase in global temperature below 1.5ËšC
