The President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rosen Plevneliev, shortly after the inauguration ceremony, has sent a letter to the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, whereby inviting him to attend the Summit of Heads of State and governments of the countries participating in the Process of South East European Cooperation, which will be held in Sofia on June 1, 2016.

Below is the letter the Bulgarian President, Rosen Plevneliev, sent to the President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi:

Dear Mr. President,

This year we mark the 20th anniversary  of the founding of the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) which began with the 1996 Sofia Declaration on Good Neighborly Relations, Stability, Security and Cooperation in the Balkans. In the past two decades, the SEECP has established itself as a leading political format for security and stability in the region.

In June of last year, Bulgaria accepted the SEECP Chairmanship-in-Office for the third time. Under the motto “SEECP – 20 Years Key to Regional Cooperation”, the Bulgarian Chairmanship set an ambitious and result-oriented agenda. We focused our efforts on three priority areas of cooperation: connectivity – energy  and transportation infrastructure; strengthening democracy, media freedom and civil societies in the region; security and migration. The Second informal Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs on the 2nd of February 2016 in Sofia adopted a Joint Statement to address the challenges posed by migratory flows.

It is time for us to consider our next steps. To this end, I have the honor of inviting you to attend the Summit of the Heads of State and Government of countries participating in the South East European Cooperation Process to be held in Sofia on the 1st of June 2016.

The Bulgarian Chairmanship-in-Office intends to prepare a Declaration in honor of the 20 year anniversary of the South East European Cooperation Process, acknowledging the SEECP as a key political format for sustainable partnership in South East Europe and a leading platform for European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

Looking forward to meeting you during the Summit in June, please accept the assurances of my highest consideration.
