The President consulted with representatives of political parties on the date of local elections

Prishtina, 21 June 2017 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, held today a consultative meeting with representatives of political parties and the Central Election Commission for setting the date of regular elections for local self-government bodies.

As defined in Article 4 of the Law on Local Elections, President Thaçi has said that setting and announcement of the date of local elections is made after consultation with political parties.

“Elections for local self-government bodies are held on Sunday every four years. Elections cannot be held earlier than sixty days before the end of the mandate and no later than thirty days after the end of the mandate. And according to the powers of the President of Kosovo set by the Constitution, the decision to set the date of elections is done no later than four months and not earlier than six months before the election date”, said president Thaçi.

Considering that last local elections were held on 3 November 2013, while the certification of the final election results by the Central Election Commission for members of municipal assemblies and the majority of mayors was made on 11 December 2013, President Thaçi said that we are within legal deadlines to act on setting the date of local elections.

The Chairperson of the Central Election Commission also expressed readiness to organize regular elections for local self-government bodies and to ensure their smooth running.

Majority of the political party representatives suggested that the date of local elections be scheduled on 22 October.

Following their proposals, based on the legal deadlines set out in the Constitution and the Law on Local Elections, President Thaçi said that these days he will set and announce the date of this year's local elections.
