DR. VJOSA OSMANI SADRIU
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO
...

The speech of President Atifete Jahjaga on the occasion of the 235th anniversary of the Declaration of the Independence of the United States of America

The Republic of Kosovo is a successful project of freely expressed will and of help and of international support. We will never forget the support of European Union and United States of America, nor we will forget NATO’s intervention in 1999 a humanitarian act that saved my people from genocide, and returned home more than half of the population that were displaced by force.

Honorable Ambassador of the United States of America to the Republic of Kosovo
Honorable officials of the Embassy of the United States of America and respected members of the American KFOR
Honorable leaders of the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo
Honorable Ambassadors of the friendly country accredited in Kosovo
Honorable diplomatic staff and members of the international missions to Kosovo
Honorable officers and members of the Kosovo Security Force
Honorable officers and members of the Kosovo Police
Honorable members, officers and soldiers of KFOR
Honorable members of EULEX
Ladies and Gentlemen

Best wishes of the people of Kosovo and of mine, for the Independence
Day of the United States of America, the country that offered and offers
to civilization crucial contribution in development and prosperity, and
the model of democracy especially in protecting peace and stability
globally.

We recall that the opening of the American Office in Pristina was a
determining moment for my people and my country in times when freedom
and Independence of the Republic of Kosovo was a dream and nationwide
goal; the realization of it with the opening of this Office seemed to be
certain, considering the engagement of the USA in defending human
rights and freedoms, in advancing the democratic processes, the rights
of people to be free and sovereign, equal and dignified with other
nations of the World.

The Republic of Kosovo is a successful project of freely expressed will
and of help and of international support. We will never forget the
support of European Union and United States of America, nor we will
forget NATO’s intervention in 1999 a humanitarian act that saved my
people from genocide, and returned home more than half of the population
that were displaced by force.

Honorable participants,

The Republic of Kosovo is a state of all citizens equal regardless of
ethnicity, religion, racial and other background because this is our
will and this is indispensable principal of civilization and of European
culture, to which my people and my country belongs too. Republic of
Kosovo will become a member of European Union and NATO, and as soon as
this occurs will be better for the region, for Europe and my people.
This is our joint success that has no other alternative, of the
institutions of Republic of Kosovo and of the support and international
engagement.

The American model in state building, in the concept of civilization and
intertwining of cultures in the international politics remains an
inspiration and an good example for my country, in building and
developing in all areas, especially in the role that the Republic of
Kosovo deserves in the region and international politics, by building
good relations with neighboring countries, by participating in all
projects and regional and global initiatives.

We have become a factor of peace and stability, an example of good
cooperation, of respect of integrity, sovereignty and subjectivity of
every country and their population, by building relations that are in
the function of free movement of people, ideas and capital.

The United States of America is leader country because it has people
with vision, committed people to the country and humankind, particularly
leaders that were committed in achieving ideals on which they believed
to be best for their country and nation. We have a lot to learn from
lives of these great people. Let me mention a saying of President
Woodrow Wilson, beloved and respected here, for engagement that every
nation has to decide about its fate, as an undeniable right.

Further, he once said:

“America is not anything if it consists of each of us. It is something only if it consists of all of us”.

And in another occasion, he said:

“The ear of the leader must ring with the voices of the people”.

These two principals which I cherish as President of country, assure me
that Kosovo we will build jointly, leaving aside partial interests and
by having full consensus for people and state interests of my country.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let me finish by quoting another famous President of the United States of America, Theodor Roosevelt:

“ Do what you can, where you are, with what you have.”

Let’s be assured that by having the voice of the people in our ears and
by working with what we can, where we are and with what we have, we
jointly as leaders and citizens will deliver our best and successful
work, for my country and all humankind.

Together with the American people, CONGRATULATIONS!
