Brussels, 31 August – President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, today attended a meeting with the Serbian President Alexander Vučić, facilitated by the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

After the meeting, President Thaçi stated that it was a fair meeting, whereby it was discussed on further steps for starting a phase of the dialogue between the state of Kosovo and of Serbia for full normalization of relations and reconciliation.

“Both Kosovo and Serbia, citizens of both countries need a final agreement that opens a perspective of our two countries,” stressed the President.

According to him, Kosovo and Serbia are two independent countries, and as neighbours, communication is a necessity. The President reiterated that this new phase of the dialogue should begin as soon as possible and be finalized as soon as possible.

“We have full confidence in the leadership role of Madame Mogherin, that European Union must have a consistent unity and a strong support from the United States of America”, added the President.

Speaking about the substance of future meetings, President Thaçi stressed that yet opened matters shall be discussed, matters that shall be concluded once and forever to end century-old hostilities.

“Today, between Kosovo and Serbia, we have a more normal communication than before. The final agreement will be helpful to each other, also such an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia implies peace and stability agreement for the entire Western Balkans region”, stated the President.

President Thaçi from Brussels appealed for a prompt establishment of Kosovo institutions, coming out of the June 11th elections. “I appeal to the entire political spectrum to promptly establish the Government, to establish and functionalize the Assembly of Kosovo,” added the President.

The President stressed that, following the establishment of institutions, Kosovo shall be represented, as consensually as possible, through a Unity Team in this final, concluding, historic, state-building part of the dialogue.

He also stated that any final solution shall be in accordance with the will of the citizens of Kosovo.

“Therefore, I urged for the establishment of a broad representatives base of Kosovar political spectrum and civil society, media and opinion-makers”, added the President.
