The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani was received today by the President of Iceland Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson, in a working visit aiming the advancement of bilateral relations and Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic path.
In the first-ever visit of a head of state of the Republic of Kosovo to Iceland, President Osmani and President Jóhannesson discussed the expansion of cooperation during Iceland’s presidency of the Council of Europe. President Osmani emphasized the important role played by this organization in guaranteeing, protecting and promoting human rights and praised Iceland’s leadership in this context. President Osmani expressed the imperative for Kosovo to become a member of this organization, underlining the extraordinary progress in guaranteeing, protecting and promoting human rights in Kosovo, including the constitutional and legal framework, which is very advanced and fully harmonized with all international conventions. She emphasized that a great injustice is being done to the citizens of Kosovo by denying them access to the European Court of Human Rights as an extremely effective instrument in the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
In addition to these issues, the two presidents also discussed the strengthening of relations between Kosovo and Iceland, underlining the potential for an increase in cooperation, and expressed their commitment to exploring new opportunities for cooperation in the future.
President Osmani pointed out that this meeting is a demonstration of the growing cooperation between Kosovo and Iceland as well as of the joint engagement to promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe.
