The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani received today at a meeting a delegation of the Global Network of Victims and Survivors of Sexual Violence from Ukraine and Colombia.
At the meeting with this delegation, President Osmani emphasized that Kosovo's recent history carries the sad story of more than 20,000 women raped by the genocidal Serbian during the 1999 war.
In this context, President Osmani mentioned the courage of former MP Vasfije Krasniqi, who three years ago testified in the American Congress about the violations committed by the Serbian genocidal forces, demanding justice.
President Osmani emphasized that the freedom gained is not complete without justice for the victims and punishment for the perpetrators.
She has informed the delegation from Ukraine and Colombia that by her proposal, April 14th in Kosovo is marked as the day of survivors of sexual violence during the war, reconfirming that as president of the country she will be the voice of these women each and every day.
The President also informed the delegation that in 2014, the Assembly of Kosovo approved the necessary legal changes, through which persons violated during the war are recognized as the victims of sexual violence, which enables them to receive a legal pension.
According to President Osmani, Kosovo's experience can help Ukraine in dealing with survivors of sexual violence. In this regard, the President has reiterated that the people of Kosovo are on the side of the Ukrainian people and will continue to support them with all possible means.
