Acting President Haxhiu: Kosovo’s path to EU membership negotiations must be opened

The Acting President of the Republic of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, received today in MEP Riho Terras, the European Parliament’s permanent rapporteur for Kosovo.

Acting President Haxhiu thanked Mr. Terras for his engagement and support on Kosovo’s European perspective. She stressed that Kosovo’s application for membership in the European Union should be processed without further delay and that the country’s progress should be assessed on its merits.

According to the Acting President, Kosovo does not seek exemption from the criteria, but a fair process, which would pave the way for it to receive candidate country status and start accession negotiations.

Acting President Haxhiu presented Kosovo’s progress in European reforms, the rule of law and economic development, as well as close cooperation with the institutions of the European Union. She noted that Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic orientation is clear, sustainable and enjoys broad civic support.

The Acting President also spoke about the dialogue with Serbia, security issues and the lack of accountability for the terrorist attack in Banjskë. She stressed that the European process must be based on the implementation of agreements and equal responsibility of all parties.
