The Acting President of the Republic of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit to the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, in recognition of its valuable contribution to Kosovo.
On this occasion, Acting President Haxhiu received the Secretary General of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, Berit Nising Lindeman, and the Deputy Secretary General, Gunnar M. Ekelove-Slydal.
“At a time when serious human rights violations in Kosovo remained far from international attention, the Norwegian Helsinki Committee was among the first Western organizations to document and make them known internationally, helping to put Kosovo on the agenda of international human rights institutions and mechanisms,” said Acting President Haxhiu.
She also praised the support that the Committee provided to local human rights organizations and its role in conveying reliable information about the situation in Kosovo to international institutions.
“Kosovo does not forget those who stood by its side at a time when international support was neither easy nor self-evident. The Presidential Medal of Merit is an expression of our gratitude for the long and principled commitment of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee on Kosovo’s path to freedom,” said the Acting President.
