The President of the Republic of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani received today at a meeting the Speaker of the Parliament of North Macedonia, Mr. Talat Xhaferi.
The meeting focused on the current political situation not only in the region but also beyond, after the military aggression of the Russian Federation on Ukraine. In this context, President Osmani stressed that Kosovo's membership in NATO is more necessary than ever to ensure peace and stability in the region.
Speaker Xhaferi stated that Northern Macedonia unreservedly supports Kosovo's membership in NATO, the Council of Europe and other international organizations.
President Osmani pointed out that Russia and Serbia as its ally are trying to destabilize Kosovo and the Balkans.
Therefore, President Osmani considers the Open Balkans initiative as a means for Serbia to extend its hegemony in the region. According to the President, Russia and other autocratic states through agreements with Serbia are trying to extend their harmful influence in the region.
President Osmani and Speaker Xhaferi also discussed the possibilities of expansion of interstate cooperation.
Bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries were assessed as good, while the Albanians living in Northern Macedonia are considered to be a strong connecting bridge with Kosovo.
