May 12th is International Nurses Day. On this day, heartfelt congratulations to all the nurses who, during this period of coping with the Covid-19 pandemic, are not only the hope but also overburdened with the greatest workload.

At the forefront of the anti-covid challenge, nurses are the most valuable asset in our healthcare system.

The weight and importance of their work should be repaid by treating them with dignity throughout their daily engagements.

On this day, I especially want to honour the contribution of many nurses throughout  Kosovo who are soon reaching retirement age and who have been practicing this profession for over 40 years. Among them is my mother, who from her age of 18 to date has over 4 decades of contribution and she never lost the will and zeal to care for the patients. She and many other nurses had started working during difficult times of patriarchate, were forcibly fired from work during the Milosevic’s regime, but continued to contribute during the 1990s through the “Mother Teresa” parallel health care system. Ultimately, they also never stopped for a moment in the facing the pandemic.

Dear nurses, we are proud of your work. We will need you even when the pandemic is over. Therefore, we want to have heroes today, but also tomorrow in other confrontations in the field of healthcare!
