The Acting President of the Republic of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, said that today marks 16 years since the publication of the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which confirmed that the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Kosovo, proclaimed on February 17, 2008, is not in conflict with international law.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn July 22nd 2010, the Court rejected the claims that the declaration of independence had violated the norms of international law, assessing that the adoption of the Declaration of Independence did not violate general international law,\u201d emphasized Acting President Haxhiu.<\/p>\n
She further added that this opinion came following Serbia\u2019s request made to the United Nations General Assembly for an advisory assessment on the legality of Kosovo\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n
According to Acting President Haxhiu, the Court’s decision constituted a moment of particular legal and diplomatic importance, strengthening the international position of the Republic of Kosovo and serving as an important basis for subsequent recognitions by many states.<\/p>\n
