The speech of the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, on the occasion of inauguration of the Centre for the Promotion of Women’s Rights in Drenas

From Kosovo women we have learned as which are the qualities that must be proven in the time of sorrow, such as the time war. Understanding, solidarity and care were the most important features that our society showed during the years of war. This solidarity was shown by our mothers, wifes, daughters and sisters.

Drenas, 15 April 2016

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Allow me to first of all congratulate you for the inauguration of the new building of the Centre for the Promotion of Women’s Rights, here in Drenas.

I wish it will serve the Centre the best, in its important work for Kosovo and for the Kosovo society.

The success of your work, in the first place, is important for the victims whom you are helping.

But the success of your work is also important for the entire society. Your work sheds light on an important truth, for our entire society and it seeks from the whole society to face with this truth.

From Kosovo women we have learned as which are the qualities that must be proven in the time of sorrow, such as the time war. Understanding, solidarity and care were the most important features that our society showed during the years of war. This solidarity was shown by our mothers, wifes, daughters and sisters.

It is time for everyone to show understanding, solidarity and care for each women victim and in need.

Therefore it is imperative to support the work of your Centre and other centres alike.

The support that you provide to all women in need, will help them to cope with their pain, but will also help the society understand their sufferings and to find a way to support them.

Kosovo society is going through several transitions, such as economic, social and cultural. Discrimination, repression, and war have prevented these transitions from happening. Now it is time to continue with them.

The obligation of the society is to create conditions for women to be educated, employed, and developed and to live a decent life, equal to the other gender.
There is no doubt that our society is making strides forward.

We are the very first country in the region to have had a female President.
We have women leaders in the Government, CEC, Constitutional Court, who face most demanding tasks in building the state of Kosovo.

We have agile female doctors, journalist, scientists, teachers, professors and artists.

We all take pride of their work and success. Emancipation and empowerment of women, recognition and support of women’s demands, support of women victims, support of all vulnerable groups, will be the focus of my commitment as President.

Our society will be truly free, equal, and fair only when every Kosovo woman is equal, free and treated fairly by everyone in Kosovo.

Thank you.
