President Thaçi: Unification of Germany strengthened the foundations of a Europe united around the western values

Prishtina, October 4th 2018 – President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, has attended the reception laid by the German Embassy in Kosovo on the occasion of the German Unity Day”.

President Thaçi said that today, we celebrate together the twenty eighth anniversary of the German unification.

“The unification of Germany, in 1990, was followed by dramatic changes in the whole of Europe. On the day that the two Germanys united, the foundations of a unified Europe were laid, unified around the soundest values of the western civilisation”, said President Thaçi.

Without this major change in Europe and in the world, according to President Thaçi, it would be unimaginable for Kosovo to become free and independent country.

“This year we are also celebrating the tenth anniversary of the state of Kosovo and of the bilateral relations between our two amicable states, between Kosovo and Germany But we are very much aware that the friendship between our two nations is much older than that.

We are proud of the amicable relations we have always had between us.

We have always been, and will always be, grateful for the unsparing political, diplomatic, economic and financial help that Germany has provided to Kosovo”, said President Thaçi.

President also added that Germany has been a home for hundreds of thousands of Kosovo Albanians during the hardest years in Kosovo’s history and that today, they are the finest bridges connecting our two states and our two nations.

“Europe and the world today are far from the enthusiasm of 1990, when the unification of Germany and Europe occurred. We are all facing the challenges which were considered to be overcome once and for all. Kosovo and Germany stand together in preservation and strengthening of the civic, political and economic values, of the Euro-Atlantic world. In Kosovo, we stand before major decisions in order to ensure the long term viability of the state of Kosovo and the wellbeing of its citizens. We are justly awaiting to very soon, travel visa free around Europe”, said President Thaçi.

The head of state also potentiated the need to further strengthen the rule of law in our country.

“Kosovo Security Force will soon take upon them a new mandate. Naturally, we must always keep in mind that this force was made in partnership with NATO and this is how it will remain. Above all, we want to achieve the historic Agreement with Serbia, which would ensure mutual recognition and full normalisation between us, as two neighbouring countries. We will agree to nothing less than a formal recognition by Serbia. Mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia opens the secure path for EU membership of two countries”, said President Thaçi.

On the other hand, according to the President, failure to achieve the agreement and the absence of a mutual recognition means a status quo and continuation of the frozen conflict.

President Thaçi said that in realisation of our ambitions, we do know that we will have the great support of Germany, of a friendly state to Kosovo.
