President Thaçi: through study scholarships, MCC is ameliorating the inequality in the energy sector

Prishtina, February 20th 2019 – President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, attended today the “Women in Energy Scholarships Programme”, which opened its application period for study scholarships in US, in the energy sector.

President Thaçi said that in the post-independence years we have invested over 200 million Euros in the renovation of the school buildings and we have to a large scale improved school infrastructure.

“We have increased the salaries of the citizens employed in educational system in order for them to have a more dignified earning, above the regional average,” said President Thaçi.

According to him, we are witnessing to moments of a misbalance in the education and labour market.

“First, one side we have a considerably large unemployment. And on the other side, many companies complain that they could not find experts and qualified staff. Secondly, in certain sectors Kosovar women have fewer employment opportunities than men. There is a discrimination present which starts from the education or even in the family, and we also see certain departments at universities which have a small number of female students. For this reason I feel happy that today the Kosovo Millennium Foundation together with MCC is undertaking a measure to address these two issues, “said President Thaçi.

The head of state said that MCC has set aside one million Euros in scholarships for girls and women of Kosovo to study in the US.

In this manner, he said that it would be helpful to our economy to have more energy experts, at times when Kosovo is preparing for great investments in energy sector.

“You are helping the women and girls of Kosovo to have a chance to ameliorate the inequality in the energy sector, where 90 per cent of the employees are male. As the President of the Republic and the signatory of the agreement between Kosovo and MCC, I am proud to see the first results of this agreement. I am happy that these funds will touch upon lives of many girls and women, who will become leaders in the energy sector, “said the President.

President Thaçi added that the generous help of the MCC, USAID and of the US Army will achieve its aims only if Kosovo is at peace with itself and its neighbours.

“No investor shall come to the region if there is talk of war or tensions. No new working places can be created if we do not dedicate ourselves to the principles of the free market, regional cooperation, but also to the principles of fighting of corruption. Kosovo’s final dream, a successful and prosperous state, which we share together with our American allies, will come true only if we move out of the status quo. For this reason, I wish that this project and this MCC investments in the people of Kosovo bear fruit, grow and multiply, working together on common objectives we have in common with the American government,’ said President Thaçi.

During the day, President Thaçi, also met with a senior delegation of the MCC, headed by the Vice President for Congressional and Public Affairs, Karen Sessions, and Jonathan Brooks, Deputy Vice President for Europe, Asia, Pacific and Latin America.

President Thaçi thanked them for the support that MCC has given to Kosovo in economic development and increase of social welfare.
