President Thaçi in Rio: A historic moment for Kosovo

Rio de Janeiro, August 5th, 2016 – President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, on the first day of his visit to Rio, Brazil, participated at the Republic of Kosovo flag-raising ceremony, organized by the International Olympic Committee, on the eve of the official opening of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

“The Republic of Kosovo flag-raising ceremony alongside other world flags represents a historic moment for our country”, President Thaçi said.
During the day, the head of state has met the eight Kosovar athletes, who will participate in various competitions in the coming days.
President Thaçi wished the best of luck to Kosovo’s athletes, saying they already champions, as they are representing the flag and symbols of the Kosovo state for the first time at the Rio Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, at the invitation of the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, President Thaçi attended the gala dinner, where present were most of the state leaders of countries participating at the Olympics.
On this occasion, President Thaçi held courtesy calls with presidents of a large number of countries that have already recognized Kosovo’s independence, but also of those who have not taken such a decision yet.
Also, President Thaçi met the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, whom he thanked for the support given to Kosovo in recent years.

In the evening, the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, will take part at the official opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, where the Kosovo athletes will also parade through Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium.
