President Jahjaga’s speech on the occasion of the Fight Against Breast Cancer Day

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, took part today at the symbolic walk, organised on the occasion of the Fight Against Breast Cancer Day.

In the presence of many participants, President Jahjaga held the following speech:

Honourable Minister Agani,
Honourable Minister Çitaku,
Honourable representatives of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo,
Honourable Mayor of Prishtina, Mr. Mustafa,
Honourable Members of Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo,
Honourable Ambassadors and representatives of the diplomatic missions in the Republic of Kosovo,
Honourable family members,
Honourable Mrs. Latifi,
Dear Friends,

This meeting-point of ours, on the day when we mark our dedication for life, dedication to win the battle against breast cancer, expresses our conviction to, as responsible citizens, raise the awareness about this illness, conducted as a joint battle of ours.

Breast cancer is an illness which touches all strata of the society, regardless, in all corners of the world. This illness, even though a very grave illness, can be cured if detected early enough.

My message today, is a message of hope, a message which springs from the force and the bravery of many women and men who have challenged this illness, overcoming all the difficulties faced by them.

It is their attempts and their successes which demonstrate how valuable a human life is and how great is the human desire to live.

I appeal to all, mothers, sisters, women and girls, to undertake regular medical check-ups as early detection and diagnosis means victory over this illness.

Through our symbolic walk, we demonstrate our solidarity and care as individuals, as a society and institutions, for all those touched by breast cancer.  Only by being together may we win this battle!

Therefore, I praise the initiative of the female members of parliament for the collection of funds for the purchase of  mobile mammographs, which will be in service to women in all corners of Kosovo. It is our joint ambition and aim to provide access to medical treatment for every woman, as only in this manner the breast cancer may be identified and prevented.

A valuable contribution to the fight against breast cancer has also been provided by the Jeta / VITA association. Mrs. Nafije Latifi has made sure to unite us all year after year to prove that we have the force and the will to prevent this illness. Cancer does not pick and chose any particular individuals, but we can choose to prevent its lethal effects.

Prevention and early detection means Life, let us win over the illness, let the Life (Jeta) win!!

Your presence here demonstrates our dedication and solidarity, which us as a nation possessed and continue to do so.
