President: Conclusion of the dialogue process with Serbia opens up a new phase for the Kosovar diplomacy

Prishtina, September 6th, 2018 – President of the country, Hashim Thaçi, attended today the fifth Kosovo Ambassadors Conference, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

President Thaçi said that Kosovo’s Ambassadors are the most important link of our state and Kosovar society with other states and international organisations.

“You are the face of Kosovo, but also the answer to all the questions all may have about Kosovo” said President Thaçi.

The head of state shared with Kosovar Ambassadors his viewpoints on some of most important questions Kosovo is faced with.

“Initially, Kosovo has made great steps ahead in consolidation of its statehood. Your line of service, only a decade old, is a confirmation of this consolidation.  But, to carry on continuing, we must conclude certain open issues which, as a wound, slow down the process of further consolidation. I refer to here the dialogue with Serbia and the need to foreclose close this open issue. At the Sofia Summit, , EU made it clear that countries of the western Balkans will join EU only when they have solved all the open issues they have between them. As Kosovo, we have excellent relations with our neighbours. We would like to have good neighbourly relations with Serbia as well and to guarantee our path towards NATO and EU”, said President Thaçi.

The president also stated that a new international momentum is created in favour of a final agreement, legally binding one, on full normalisation of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

“We must utilizer this momentum and conclude the chapter of war between Kosovo and Serbia. The sustainable peace between Kosovo and Serbia will also mean sustainable peace in the whole region of the South Eastern Europe. Achievement of the agreement will not be easy, but it is the only solution. Alternative to this is the prolonguement of animosities and diving into a frozen conflict. You know best on how difficult it is to open the doors of the international community today. Therefore, it is crucial to move away from the status quo and to move towards a solution which will open the doors of the international community to Kosovo” added the President.

President also stated that we have never allowed for the issues of partition or of the exchange of territories to be opened in Brussels and we will not agree to opening of such issues in the future either.

But, according to him, Kosovo is ready to, as part of the definition of the border between Kosovo and Serbia undertake the correction of the border line.

“Taking into consideration the international momentum which has been created, now is the time to open the subject of joining of the Presheva Valley to Kosovo. This is an age old request made by the Presheva Valley. As a president, I have accepted the request of the leaders of Presheva Valley to present this request at the dialogue process in Brussels and to the international community. At the end of this process, we see Kosovo as a state recognised by Serbia, a United Nations member state and with e clear perspective of EU and NATO membership”, said President Thaçi.

He also said that nothing will change in the multi-ethnic character of the state and society, and that each step of pour will be coordinated with the international community, especially with Washington and Brussels.

“Conclusion of the dialogue with Serbia will open up a new phase for the Kosovar diplomacy”, said President Thaçi

He pointed out that we can concentrate our attention and energies on matters of greater importance to the citizens of Kosovo.

“We will concentrate on economic development of the country, strengthening of the rule of law and realisation of commenced reforms”, said Thaçi.

The head of state said to the Ambassadors that this was a decade of challenges, but also of great achievements.

“We have built a diplomatic service from scratch. Many of you have opened for the very first time the Embassies of Kosovo around the world. Today, we are present in all continents, in all corners of the globe, and our voice is heard worldwide. This is your merit, a merit of your work and your dedication”, said the President.

He also added that the institutions of the country highly praise the work, engagements and the sacrifices made by Kosovo’s Ambassadors.
