President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, met today with the President of the European Council, Mr. Herman Van Rompuy.
President Jahjaga thanked President Rompuy for his support and the support of the institutions of the European Union towards the clear European perspective of Kosovo as well as of the whole region. She stated that Kosovo has made considerable advances in fulfilment of the criteria and standards required for the initiation of the negotiations for the Stabilisation-Association Agreement, as well as for the Visa liberalisation process which will enable the citizens of Kosovo to travel freely as do the citizens of other countries of the region.
President Jahjaga emphasized that the institutions and the society of Kosovo is determined in its endeavour to build a legal state where law and order prevail. She said that the fight against corruption and organized crime is a priority and that Kosovo has built all necessary mechanisms in order to fight these negative phenomena.
President Jahjaga stated that Kosovo is a factor of peace and stability in the region and promoter of good neighbourliness. She said that she supports the dialogue process mediated by EU and supported by the USA between the Republic of Kosovo and Republic of Serbia which aims the normalisation of relations and easing of the lives of citizens of both countries.
Madam President also said that the meeting of the Presidents of the both countries, mediated by EU, is in function of the normalisation and relaxation of relations between the Republic of Kosovo and Republic of Serbia, two states which aspire EU membership.
President of the European Council, Mr. Herman Van Rompuy, congratulated President Jahjaga for her role and direct engagement in support of the dialogue process which is being held in Brussels. He said that dialogue is in function of the European spirit which aims to overcome the problems of the past and offering of a perspective to all citizens.
President Rompuy emphasized that the European perspective is clear and open to all countries of the region and that they must work towards building of the bridges of mutual cooperation.
