The President: The agreement on Power Plant “New Kosovo” ensures energetic independence to Kosovo

Prishtina, 20 December 2017 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, attended the Agreement signing ceremony between the Government of Kosovo and the company “Contour Global” for the construction of “New Kosovo” Power Plant.

President Thaçi stated that this agreement gives a final resolution to an essential issue for Kosovo.

This Power Plant, according to President Thaçi, apart from giving stability to the energy sector, it also gives a new impetus to Kosovo's economic development.

“This contract represents the largest private investment in Kosovo's history and contributes to the economic growth. Moreover, this Agreement is also a continuation of our strategic partnership with the United States of America”, stated President Thaçi.

He stated that today’s agreement, representing 1.3 billion Euros of investment, is the most meaningful indicator for positioning Kosovo as an investment destination.

“Foreign direct investments are marking new successes, which are translated into positive impact and encourage the creation of new jobs. It is worth mentioning that only the implementation phase of this project shall generate around 10 thousand new jobs. Such successes come as a result of a tireless and persistent work of Kosovo institutions towards improving investment climate. This progress is confirmed to Kosovo also by various international assessors of global economies”.

President Thaçi also stated that, apart from solving a sensitive problem to our country, by this investment, we are conveying clear signals to the world that we are a country with potential and a country that offers investment security.

“Kosovo's orientation towards Euro-Atlantic integration is long and demanding, nevertheless it is a guarantee that our country is on the right track to a sustainable development”, stated the President.

Following its operation, stated President Thaçi, the “New Kosovo” Power Plant is expected to have a lifespan of 40 years.

“This long-term planning will enable our society to design a prosperous future for generations to come. And this period, apart  from its contribution to the sustainability of supply,  it will also guarantee independence from regional energy prices, that Kosovo will no longer will depend on in the future”, stressed President Thaçi.

Over the course of these decades, added the Head of the State, institutions will have enough time to create new production capacities based on renewable energy sources.

He also stressed that this historic agreement, which is taking place on the eve of the 10th anniversary of independence, firmly moves Kosovo towards its energetic independence.
