The President: Taking over the full responsibilities in justice is a result of institutional maturity

Prishtina, March 9, 2018 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, participated today in the conference “Functional Review of the Rule of Law Sector”, organized by the Ministry of Justice.

President Thaçi said that the political and legal reality of the Republic of Kosovo, as an independent and sovereign state, with a multiethnic and tolerant society, is the fulfillment of the long time dreams and expectations of its citizens.

“We are now aiming for the membership of our country in the European Union, which will conclude this aspiration”, he said.

The President emphasized that among the most important link in strengthening the European perspective is a justice system which is functional, transparent, accountable and trusted by all the citizens of the country.

He has said that the rule of law is a constitutional obligation and basic prerequisite to ensure that every citizen of the Republic of Kosovo is equal before the law.

“This is the basic value and principle of our constitutional order”, said President Thaçi.

Speaking about the functional review of the rule of law sector, President Thaçi has requested that this process must be in the function of guaranteeing the implementation of these principles and constitutional values, in the function of all citizens without distinction.

“Through this process, the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo demonstrate the ability and will to provide citizens with a functional, transparent and above all effective rule of law system. Therefore, today, I offer my full support to the Rule of Law Sector Review”, he said.

President Thaçi has requested from all institutions to have a common commitment in order to make the results more tangible, lasting and long-lasting.

“I congratulate the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, and in particular the Minister of Justice for the strong impetus given to this process. We need to know the courage and willingness of the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo to start one of the deepest reforms of this sector”, he said.

The Head of State has affirmed that the Republic of Kosovo has achieved considerable results in the field of building independent institutions of justice and rule of law.

According to him, this has been achieved thanks to our dedication and the precious assistance of our international partners.

He added that with the transfer of the full responsibilities in the justice sector from international institutions to local ones, the responsibility of the state of Kosovo increases to ensure an efficient, independent and sustainable system for future generations.

“Kosovo’s institutions are taking over the full responsibilities in the most sensitive state sectors. This is the result of the institutional maturity and professional capacities which were created with sacrifice in order to build our country”, he said, demanding from everyone to be in charge of the duties in this important engagement.

President Thaçi has stressed that everybody’s work should be seen and be tangible to all citizens of the Republic of Kosovo without distinction.

Participants at this conference were the President of the Assembly of Kosovo, Kadri Veseli, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Ramush Haradinaj, the Minister of Justice, Abelard Tahiri, the US Deputy Ambassador, Colleen Hyland and other participants.
