President Thaçi: With our Constitution we are walking alongside the civilized world

Prishtina, April 07, 2017 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, participated today at the ceremony marking the ninth anniversary of the Constitution of Kosovo, organized by the Ministry of Justice.

President Thaçi said that the Day of the Constitution is a historic date for the Republic of Kosovo.

“Nine years ago, we, the people of Kosovo, adopted the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo, where we decided to build a future of Kosovo as a free, democratic and peace-loving country, which will be a homeland to all its citizens. There we expressed the commitment for the creation of a state of equal citizens, which will guarantee the rights of every citizen, the civil freedoms and equality of all the citizens in front of the law”, said President Thaçi.

The Republic of Kosovo, according to President Thaçi, besides guaranteeing the fundamental human rights and freedoms envisaged in the Constitution, has also issued a number of laws that define a general framework for the prevention and combating of all forms of discrimination, and at the same time has created the necessary institutions.

The President said that during these nine years concrete steps have been undertaken so that market economy with free competition to be the basis of economic order in the Republic of Kosovo.

“Work has been done to create a climate to attract foreign investors, to facilitate doing business, the creation of new jobs. Work has been done and there is being worked continuously for a social prosperity for all the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo, without discrimination. We are a factor of stability in the region. We have reached historic agreements for the normalization of relations with Serbia, we are engaged in promoting peace and reconciliation”, said President Thaçi.

Speaking about the constitutional principles, the President said that they are based on inclusion, equality and freedom of each individual to fulfill themselves, with their rights, having never been violated, to be part of Kosovar society.

The President Thaçi said that since the adoption of the Constitution until now, the Republic of Kosovo has authority over law enforcement, security, justice, public safety, intelligence, civil emergency bodies and on border control within its territory.

The security institutions, according to President Thaçi, protect the public safety and the rights of all.

At the ceremony marking the ninth anniversary of the Constitution of Kosovo, President Thaçi also spoke about the applicability of the Constitution, which is essential for our country.

“The Constitutional Court as an independent body has played an important role in the protection of the constitutionality and the final interpretation of the Constitution. We all must be committed to respect the constitutional and legal order of the Republic of Kosovo, with the aim of moving forward and to be side by side with the civilized world”, he said.

President Thaçi said that at all this work and these results for nine years, since the adoption of the Constitution, in the building of the state and the constitutional institutions, Kosovo has had the unreserved support from friend countries, like the United States of America, the countries of the European Union and other countries.

He said that this support enables us to accomplish our goal easier, for the state of Kosovo to be included in the integration processes and to be a complete member of the Euro-Atlantic institutions.
